Themed Bed & Breakfast - Lurgan House, Westport

Lurgan House B&BProperty: Lurgan House, Westport, County Mayo

Theme(s): Walking

When driving out of Westport on the road to Croagh Patrick there are two things that are bound to catch your eye, the first is the aforementioned and the second is Lurgan House, painted in a striking burgundy colour! Situated off the main Road in a quite peaceful location!  Owner/Hostess, Christine Scahill was going to change the colour, but guests find the house so easy to locate that the burgundy is deemed to stay for another while!!   The warmth of the colour on the outside reflects the warmth of the welcome you will receive inside from Christine in this comfortable house just 1km from the beautiful town of Westport and  the Habour.

Situated in private mature gardens, guests can relax  and absorb the ever changing view of Croagh Patrick and Clew Bay. Though the physical landscape of this rugged Atlantic coast remains unmoved, the shadows and light thrown upon it, dictated by the time of day and the weather is something spectacular; complimented of course by some tea/coffee and nice home bakes from Christine’s kitchen,   Pan Cakes, Scones ,brown bread and banana bread is particularly good!!  Lurgan House is in a wonderful situation for accessing the abundance of activities available in the Westport area.  Golf, fishing, museums, horseriding, beaches, swimming pools, shopping, to mention a few; and visiting Westport House is a great day out in itself.  If you are too spoilt for choice, just ask Christine and she’ll help you with plan your day ahead.

The most wonderful way to explore this part of the West has to be by foot.  There are many walks in the Westport area of varying distance and terrain, from a tidal walk along the sandy coast suitable for a family amble or a hill walk ascending along a country road to the more strenuous trek over the Owenwee Bog or up Skelp Mountain, many to choose from and one to suit your walking level.   Christine is a keen walker herself, but prefers to stay on the flat roads. However, she has a great guide, Eric Houlet a French man who came to walk the area many years ago and stayed at Lurgan House.  He found the walks so good he has moved here now permanently and organizes walks for groups and individuals tailor made to suit all needs.   If you prefer to walk yourself, Christine, through Eric will get maps, guides and forecasts or anything else you might need to make your trek more enjoyable.
The jewel in the walking crown here has to be the famous Croagh Patrick, which keeps watch over Westport and the rolling waters of Clew Bay.  For the serious walker, the 764 metre ascent is not for the faint hearted and good boots will help. But spare a thought for those involved in building the Oratory at the top in 1905!!  If you don’t like crowds, it is recommended that you avoid the last Sunday in July (Reek Sunday) where over 25,000 pilgrims climb Croagh Patrick, many barefoot, ouch!!   Just remember that you have a comfortable bed at Lurgan House to go home to at the end of the day.  When at the top of Croagh Patrick, take in the 360º view; hey look, over there, its Christine’s burgundy house!!!
